What Are Smoke Vents, AOVs & SHEV Units?

A smoke vent can refer to any opening or system that allows smoke, heat and toxic gases to escape from a building in the case of a fire.

AOV (automatic opening vent) is a type of smoke vent that opens automatically when triggered by fire detection systems, such as smoke detectors, fire alarms or manual call points. AOV smoke vents come in the shape of rooflights, louvres, facade louvres or dedicated vents and are often fitted in the roofs of corridors and stairways.
SHEV (smoke and heat exhaust ventilation unit) refers to an entire integrated ventilation system, whereas AOVs or other types of smoke vent are specific components of this system.

Where Are Smoke Vents Needed?

Smoke vents are often found in corridors, hallways, stairwells, multi-storey buildings, underground areas and roof spaces. In these settings they make egress and ingress safer for occupants and emergency services, and significantly reduce the spread of
smoke.

For many building types smoke vents are a legal requirement - as dictated by Approved Document B (Fire Safety), in the UK.

Different Types of Smoke Vents

Different smoke vents are suitable for different building needs:

Metal Smoke Vents

These vents are usually made from aluminium and are designed to be robust and highly fire-resistant. Integrated as part of automatic opening systems they can withstand high temperatures, and are often selected for industrial and commercial premises.

Glass Smoke Vents

Glass smoke vents, or glass louvres, are also incredibly durable, while allowing natural light into the building. They’re double glazed, thermally efficeant and low profile, and these attributes make them popular for large commercial building and HMO's alike.

Polycarbonate Smoke Vents

Commonly used in both commercial and residential properties, polycarbonate smoke
vents are lightweight, energy-efficient and effective. Like glass vents, they allow light
into a building thanks to their transparent or translucent design.

We can offer you vents in a range of materials, and you can choose additional features for your system, including control panels, fireman’s switches, battery backup and smoke detectors. Other products such as roof access hatches are also available to
completement your fire safety setup.

Benefits of Smoke Vents

Smoke vents offer a number of significant benefits, including:

Fire Safety

The main function of smoke vents is to ensure the highest level of fire safety in a building. In the case of a fire, smoke vents release heat, smoke and toxic gases, helping to establish clear escape routes and greatly reduce the risk of injury or death.

Automatic Ventilation

AOV smoke vents open instantly as soon as detection systems trigger them. This ensures that smoke is released incredibly quickly - often before occupants even know there’s a fire.

Compliance

Smoke vents are legally required in many properties, so fitting appropriate systems will ensure compliance with regulations, such as Approved Document B and EN12101-2, in the UK.

Installation Considerations

Here are a few key points to consider when installing a smoke vent:

Make Sure Your Vent is Compliant

For a vent to be legally installed in the UK for life safety purposes it has to be compliant with European standard EN12101-2. We can help you choose the right, certified vents in conjuntion with your building inspector or fire safety expert.

Make Sure It’s Properly Placed

To work as effectively as possible your vent should be strategically placed, ideally in a high space. It’s also vital to ensure adequate clearance for automatic systems to open fully, with no obstructions or debris preventing this.
